MONTH 1 DAY 22: MAKE IT FUN, MAKE IT LAST: HOW TO STICK TO YOUR HABITS WITHOUT STRUGGLING

ree

We all have habits we want to build—exercising more, reading daily, eating healthier, or waking up earlier. But let’s be honest: sticking to habits can be hard, especially when they feel like chores. The secret to making habits last? Make them enjoyable and meaningful!

When you actually like your habits and see the bigger picture behind them, they stop feeling like a burden and start feeling like a natural part of your life. Here’s how you can make your habits fun, fulfilling, and easy to stick with.

1. Attach Meaning to Your Habit

A habit without meaning feels like an obligation. A habit with purpose feels like a choice.

Ask yourself:

  • Why do I want to build this habit?

  • How will it improve my life?

  • What will my future self thank me for?

For example: 🚴 Instead of “I need to exercise,” think: “Moving my body makes me feel strong and energetic.” 📚 Instead of “I should read more,” think: “Books help me grow and expand my mind.”

When you connect a habit to a deeper reason, you’ll be more motivated to stick with it.

2. Make It Fun & Enjoyable

If your habit feels like torture, you won’t stick with it for long. Find ways to make it something you want to do.

💃 Add entertainment: Love music? Play your favorite songs while working out. Hate cleaning? Listen to a fun podcast while doing it.

🎮 Turn it into a game: Track your progress, set small challenges, or reward yourself when you hit milestones.

👯 Do it with others: Exercising, reading, or learning a new skill is much more fun when done with a friend.

3. Start Small & Build Up

Big goals can be overwhelming. The key is to start small and let momentum build.

💡 If you want to meditate, start with 2 minutes instead of 20.💡 If you want to journal, write just one sentence a day.💡 If you want to exercise, start with a 5-minute workout.

Small wins create confidence, and confidence keeps you going.

4. Reward Yourself

Your brain loves rewards. When you reward yourself for completing a habit, you reinforce the behavior.

🔹 After completing a workout, treat yourself to a smoothie. 🔹 After a week of consistent journaling, buy yourself a new notebook. 🔹 After hitting a reading goal, watch an episode of your favorite show guilt-free.

The key? Pick rewards that make you feel good without undoing your progress.

5. Change Your Environment

Your surroundings play a huge role in making (or breaking) habits. If something is out of sight, it’s out of mind. If something is easy to access, you’re more likely to do it.

🏋️ Want to work out? Keep your workout clothes where you can see them. 📖 Want to read more? Leave a book on your nightstand instead of your phone. 🥗 Want to eat healthier? Make fruits and veggies the first thing you see in your fridge.

Make good habits easy and bad habits hard.

6. Stack It with Another Habit

Pairing a new habit with an existing one makes it easier to remember. This is called habit stacking.

💡 Want to meditate? Do it right after brushing your teeth. 💡 Want to drink more water? Have a glass before your morning coffee. 💡 Want to practice gratitude? Say one thing you're grateful for before bed.

Linking habits together makes them feel effortless over time.

7. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

Missing a day does not mean failure. The key is to keep going.

Instead of beating yourself up, ask:

  • What made me skip today?

  • How can I make it easier tomorrow?

  • Can I do just a little bit instead of skipping completely?

Consistency beats intensity. Even a little effort is better than none.

Final Thoughts

The best habits are the ones you enjoy and find meaning in. When you make your habits fun, rewarding, and easy, they stop feeling like chores and start feeling like a natural part of your life.

So, what’s one habit you want to make more enjoyable? Try one of these tips and see how it transforms your routine!
